If the ash heaps are associated with lifelessness and barrenness, and white/gray is associated with the ash heaps, anyone described as white/gray is going to be connected to barren lifelessness. -RM

Wilson's face is "ashen," and a "white ashen dust" covers his suit , and his eyes are described as "pale" and "glazed." -RM
He's in a marriage with a woman who doesn't love or respect him, who walks through him as though he's a GHOST; and meanwhile he just does what she says. an that's why the color that represents him is white. -RM
Overall, I think the color white is supposed to be a symbol of innocence and honorability through out the novel.
