Jay Gatsby is a sly character throughout the book and he is viewed differently by every person. Throughout the story you learn who he is, where he comes from and how he got his money. People may accuse him for being in the wrong, but only reading can tell you the truth. (CC)
Chapter One: Although Gatsby is not physically present in chapter one, he still plays a big role in the chapter. Everyone knows Gatsby as the "party man" or "money man" and have their opinions on how they believe he got his money. No one has seen what he looks like, nor have they met him yet, so no one knows his identity or how he made himself. (CC)
Chapter Two: There is no mention of Gatsby in this chapter. (CC)
Chapter Three: In this chapter, Gatsby throws a party that Nick can hear from his house. Further in the night, Nick receives an invitation to the party (something rare for the party, most people aren't invited, they just show up). They describe the appearance of Gatsby as having a rare and understanding smile, elegant, young, roughneck around the age of 31 or 32 and he picks his words very carefully.
In this chapter Gatsby talks to Jordan about his life, but the reader does not hear the conversation. By the end of chapter three, Gatsby and Nick are good friends. (CC) Chapter Four: In this chapter, Gatsby is accused of Bootlegging by Tom (not a person to person conversation, Tom makes the comment to Nick and Daisy). While Gatsby and Nick have fun flying in a hydroplane and getting lunch, Nick meets Gatsby's friend, Wolfsheim. We don't know exactly how Gatsby and Wolfsheim are connected but I am sure F. Scott Fitzgerald will let us know soon just what this caramel-colored suit wearing guy is up to! (CC)
Chapter Five: It's getting intense up in West Egg. Gatsby has asked Nick to set up tea with Daisy in hopes that Daisy will remember her love for him and take him back. The lawn must be cut and the rain must stop; but most importantly...Gatsby must keep his cool. He is so nervous he cant help but pace around the room helplessly.
After the tea, Gatsby and Daisy start spending a lot of secret time together! Uh Oh! Better not let Tom find out! (CC) |
